Nicole has been an ex-pat in Oman for six years and counting, and she is the interviewee for this week as we discuss life in the Muslim country and some of the reasons why she left the states over ten years ago, if she can ever picture herself moving back to America to settle, or if life outside the states suits her better. It was great catching up with her as her great life adventure continues in a very positive way, even with the pandemic and the canceled plans.

Long time readers of the blog might remember my first interview with Nicole over four years ago. She was actually one of the first podcast with expats guests, so it was nice to catch up and see if she is still loving life in Oman. In the years in between interviews, she has indeed been one busy bee.
Her nickname as a kid was Nikki Hustle, and she has lived up to the name by not only writing for some of the biggest magazines, she has also been actively doing speaking engagements on travel as a single woman, as well as authoring a book on how to teach worldwide. All this in addition to running a pretty big, and one of the best travel groups on Facebook in my opinion.

Some of the highlights of our talk where she shared a lot of laughs:

  • What motivated her to say goodbye to America.
  • How long she has been in Nizwa.
  • Safety as a single woman in Oman.
  • How she is enjoying teaching, a departure from her chosen profession.
  • The typical school week for her.
  • Procuring alcohol in a Muslim country.
  • The dating life in her little section of the world.
  • Cost of living in Oman.
  • Her other globetrotting travels.
  • The three choices of countries where she would love to retire in, as she doesn´t see a return to America to live.
  • How Covid disrupted her summer plans, and how it is a blessing in disguise as it´s forcing her to save more.
  • Her next destination post-pandemic.
  • The future of travel as she sees it.

I think it´s absolutely fabulous that she is helping to demystify the notion that one can not be safe in countries that are deemed ¨dangerous¨thanks to the jargon that is continuously being spoon-fed to us by the media. As mentioned in the interview, this is coming from someone who has been on the ground for years and not a Jannie come lately so to speak, so it carries some weight behind it.
It enforces the notion that we can all get along if we only just try to understand where the other side is coming from, but l will get off my soapbox. Her tagline is inspiring others to globe-trot, and l see that she is certainly accomplishing that. The world is so wide open and we can learn so much from travel. Mark Twain continues to be right. Travel is fatal to prejudice and bigotry.
