The 94,000 eat capacity football stadium shaped like a calabash (a gourd used to drink beer). A real treat for us to see.

Hello from Johannesburg, South Africa. It’s summer here, but the temperature is quite bearable. I was terrified the first day as l thought we brought rain with us. It had been raining all week before we left Seville. We got to Rome and it rained for a while before clearing up. Imagine my surprise when we landed in Johannesburg to wonderful weather only to have it turn into an ear-splitting thunderous rainstorm  within an hour of arrival and stayed that way for the rest of the day and night 🙁 . Thankfully, it cleared by the next morning and it’s been perfect since then. Here is a quick post of our first impressions of this absolutely amazing city.

Rare Epic Travel Fail To See Sintra Portugal

rare epic travel fail to see sintra
A view of Sintra. Wikipedia Image

I fully admit that this epic fail is partially, if not completely my fault. First, we were traveling in August. Can you say the height of summer? Foolish l know, but l was on a high. We were at the tail end of a 31 day trip that had seen us in Madrid, Rome, Stockholm, then Bologna, back to Rome, and finally Lagos in Portugal. Everything had gone pretty smoothly, even with the summer crowds. Sintra however was a total disaster from the start.

Had l not been such a stubborn ass, we could have avoided this tale of woe. I had read up on Sintra and was really anxious to visit this supposedly charming place. Mention Sintra to anyone and you will get nothing but glowing accolades. I saw travel websites and bloggers throwing around words like charming, fantastic, picturesque, majestic and my favorite “Sintra exudes a romantic aura that left a deep impression on the soul of writers since the 18th and 19th centuries.”. Is it any wonder that l had big dreams for this place?

Drottingholm palace in Stockholm is the official private residence of the Swedish royal family. This stunning beauty is located on an island called Lovon. Prior to 1981, it was only used as the royal summer residence. We saw the other palace in Stockholm and that was already impressive. That is now being used for official government business. It is also a popular tourist destination.

The Drottingholm palace surely offers more privacy. The fact that the grounds are massive and utterly gorgeous would be appealing to me. We decided to visit the palace on the last of ten days spent in Stockholm. I am so glad we did as it was worth every penny.

To get to Drottingholm Palace from Stockholm, we took one of the Stockholm Boat Tour water cruises operated by Stromma from city hall. An hour of picture perfect views, cool breeze and some cold water and we were in Drottingholm. Here is our recap of our wonderful day trip from Stockholm, one that’s highly recommended.

experience djuronaset hotel
The Boat House at the Djuronaset where we had lunch. What a nice way to experience some of the Swedish Archipelagos.

The Djuronaset hotel (pronounce without the D) is located in the Stockholm archipelago, on Djuro island. It is a mere forty five minute drive from the city, making for a lovely getaway from the hustle and bustle. Our experience couldn’t have been better, starting from the very comfortable bus that picked us up from the conference hotel in Stockholm.
