Hello from Johannesburg, South Africa. It’s summer here, but the temperature is quite bearable. I was terrified the first day as l thought we brought rain with us. It had been raining all week before we left Seville. We got to Rome and it rained for a while before clearing up. Imagine my surprise when we landed in Johannesburg to wonderful weather only to have it turn into an ear-splitting thunderous rainstorm within an hour of arrival and stayed that way for the rest of the day and night 🙁 . Thankfully, it cleared by the next morning and it’s been perfect since then. Here is a quick post of our first impressions of this absolutely amazing city.

I Still Miss My Father After All These Years.

I miss my father:

I still miss my father. Everyday. I rarely talk about my loss to people. He died almost 21 years ago at the age of 72. It’s hard for me to believe that so much time has passed. The memory of his death is still so vivid in my mind. I thought he was invincible.

A daughter’s tribute to her father:

My father ate right, didn’t smoke, exercised and had the biggest heart ever, almost to a fault. It would take him and my mum 5 full days to finish one bottle of Guinness. One phone call at work shattered my world.

My father had suddenly started bleeding about 3 weeks prior. They were unable to treat him in Nigeria. It was ultimately colon cancer. Even though the doctors suspected it, they had no equipment to make a proper diagnosis. The decision was made to transfer his care to a London hospital.

Unfortunately, a visa was only granted to my mother. My siblings were all refused visas. One of the curses of having a third world passport is that you are often denied entry to the first world countries. They just assume that people will go and never return. I still get pissed when people say “anyone can travel”. I am happy that medical tourism exists. He was packed with ice and put on a plane.

Nigerian Cuisine – The Most Favorite Nigerian Meals

A Sunday favorite of many Nigerians for breakfast. Boiled yam with fried eggs and stew. We eat everything with stew it seems. Stew and goat meat.

Nigerian cuisine is excellent. Very hearty and full of carbohydrates and meat. We really don’t believe in all the fad diets that seem to be so prevalent in first world countries. In fact, one should realise that for most people, it is a fortunate thing to be able to afford three square meals a day.

A diet is usually accidental because the wages are so low, it becomes impossible to eat well. It’s really a first world problem to have so much waste and choice. There are three major tribes in Nigeria. The Yorubas are in the South. The two other major tribes are Igbo in the East, and Hausa in the North. They have their own different food and ingredients that l am not familiar with, and for the purposes of this post, I will focus on the food of the Yorubas as that is my tribe.
