I Still Miss My Father After All These Years.

I miss my father

I miss my father
Celebrating his 70th birthday.

I miss my father:

I still miss my father. Everyday. I rarely talk about my loss to people. He died almost 21 years ago at the age of 72. It’s hard for me to believe that so much time has passed. The memory of his death is still so vivid in my mind. I thought he was invincible.

A daughter’s tribute to her father:

My father ate right, didn’t smoke, exercised and had the biggest heart ever, almost to a fault. It would take him and my mum 5 full days to finish one bottle of Guinness. One phone call at work shattered my world.

My father had suddenly started bleeding about 3 weeks prior. They were unable to treat him in Nigeria. It was ultimately colon cancer. Even though the doctors suspected it, they had no equipment to make a proper diagnosis. The decision was made to transfer his care to a London hospital.

Unfortunately, a visa was only granted to my mother. My siblings were all refused visas. One of the curses of having a third world passport is that you are often denied entry to the first world countries. They just assume that people will go and never return. I still get pissed when people say “anyone can travel”. I am happy that medical tourism exists. He was packed with ice and put on a plane.

Fathom Adonia setting sail from Miami

Fathom Cruise to the Dominican Republic – Our trip was aboard the Adonia. It was a very enlightening and fun voyage. It was a chance to see another side of the country that most tourists never get to see.

It was also a chance to meet new people and do some good, no matter how small it felt. Often times, l, and l am sure a lot of other people, tend to feel guilty about being so fortunate.

Sensoji Temple in Asakusa prefecture, Tokyo, Japan
A little greenery at the Sensoji Temple in Asakusa prefecture, Tokyo, Japan gives a great impression of Japan.

Tokyo was certainly not on the proverbial bucket list.  It has only been recently that it came on the radar. I think it was mostly due to the travel event that we attended recently. Seeing the presentations from the different countries in Asia spurred our interest.

The post about our destination wish list for the new year included Japan and Maldives. Thanks to crazy airfare deals, we were able to cross the Maldives off the list and now, Japan as well. Our 12-day trip in Tokyo was absolutely fantastic, and jarring as well. Here are some very surprising impressions of the capital city of Japan.
