You knew it was just a matter of time before l had another rant. I have been stewing over two of the three trends l am going to talk about for at least 2-3 months when l found out. The first makes me almost apoplectic and l want to reach out and hand some of these people a nice back handed slap like mummy used to give me :-). I just never cease to be amazed at the lack of class and grace that some travellers possess. They give everyone else a bad name indeed. Here are 3 of the travel trends that really anger me.

3 Travel trends that make me angry:

Social media and instant gratification is all that matters. We get it!  Everyone wants to become an instant sensation, get their 15 minutes of fame. In this quest, it seems a lot of (young) people are taking it two steps further in quests for recognition. Once again, I question if my age has to do with my limited amount of tolerance, but l doubt it. It seems like basic shame and decency is lacking. I don’t know when society devolved to this level of near zero self respect. It saddens me also that most of the culprits are young women :-(. If you remember one of the previous rants on beg packing,

*Update*

I have some good news. It seems at least a few Asian countries including Thailand have decided to  crack down on beg packers. Some tourists are being asked for return tickets and a minimum of $750 to fund their trip and some have been prevented from entry without it. Hear! Hear!

 Bad travel trends:

  • Baring your butt in holy or outdoor places
  • Arms outstretched, back turned to the camera
  • Choosing a destination based on Instagram

Baring your butt in beautiful landscapes for Instagram:

Cheeky Exploits by twats:

The latest rage don’t you know?. I’m not even sure what the motivation is. Is it that they are proud of their rear ends and feel everyone must see it? Is it because they think the beauty of their butt matches the beauty of the landscape or do they think their butts enhance the beauty? Whatever their reasoning, I find it rude and disrespectful. I hope these people are on drugs as l hesitate to think that someone of sound mind would choose to do something so stupid.

I read some idiot girl’s reasoning and wish l could remember where. She said it was something she could look back on when she got old and be proud. What??? Proud of what exactly? That she defaced a beautiful place? Nice thing to show your kids and grand kids. I guess it’s not enough anymore to just travel and enjoy amazing places, your experience is not complete until you bare your butt cheeks.

There’s even a whole account dedicated to it with over a quarter million followers. Check out some of the “artistic” butt baring shots on the feed. The touristy areas of Spain are getting very fed up with the horrible behavior of tourists and you are now seeing “tourists not welcome” graffiti in places like Barcelona.

You can read about some of the latest actions actions, like Rome banning public drinking and forbidding tourists to go sightseeing in bikinis. It seems to have been something started by American tourists (surprise..surprise!) on trips abroad and has caught on with others. Imagine a family with young children coming upon one of these twats? I’m wondering how they will top this one? Full frontal? Sexual intercourse?

Picking your destination based on its Instagramability:

W Hotel Barcelona Pool. Instagram worthy. Must go there then 🙂

[the_ad id=”13783″]

I think l just made that word up, but you get what I’m trying to say. How dumb are you to pick a place to travel based on how it will look on your feed? According to an insurance survey, 40% of millennials chose their holiday destination based on how photogenic the place is. The opportunity to sight see and discover the place came in at a lowly 3.9%. Even discovering local cuisine came in at 9%.  I’ll just leave it right there as l don’t even know what to say.

This sort of reminds me of the travellers who rush through countries in a quest to rack up the numbers. It’s kind of sad that they don’t consider really getting to experience places. They have no idea what they are missing out on, which is a shame. The urge to show off to your friends, or at least perceived friends is just too strong. Getting those “likes” and affirmation  is addictive. It seems to me they would be better off just hiring a talented person who is good at Photoshop and be done with it, they wouldn’t even need to leave the house :-).

The back turned to the camera, arms outstretched pose:

This is as close you l can get 🙂

JUST STOP IT ALREADY!!!! To say l am sick and tired of seeing this completely overused, jaded and non-imaginative pose would be putting it mildly. It might have been cute a year or so ago, but now, every Tom, Dick and Harry is doing it. I’m not even sure what it’s supposed to signify and l have asked a couple of bloggers why they do it. Because everyone does it is not a good answer. Please, for the love of god, stop it.

Federico loves this arm outstretched pose, but he faces the camera (the original was actually grabbing his junk, but l put an end to that! 🙂 ). I urge travelers to be a little more imaginative, and no..no picture of your feet and the beach either. How about this? Show us a picture of where you are..the building, the landscape, the museum, the pool even and leave yourself out. It is not artistic, it is not new, it’s just old.

[the_ad id=”14098″]

Bonus travel trend that sucks:

Disrespectul Tourists:

Rubbish! Why do people travel and think the world is their trash can? It’s annoying to see how much litter travelers leave behind! I just simply don’t understand why you can’t hold on to your trash till you reach a bin and then chuck it! Please stop it!.

Aaaahh.. I feel better now that I’ve gotten those travel trends off my chest. I certainly wouldn’t be sad if they all went away tomorrow. My advice to young people? Think about what you’re showing the world. Have some respect for yourself. Don’t be a sheep that just follows. Be the sheep dog that leads. Think about the sort of example you’re setting. What looks like fun at the time might just come back and bite you in the butt so to speak. That “friend” that took the picture might have snapped some more and sooner or later use it against you.

Tourists behaving badly: My thoughts

I would like to appeal to other travellers and have them think about the impact they are having on other travellers. We don’t want to be painted by the same brush and be considered all bad. Already you can see it happening. Places that have mass tourism with unruly drunken asshats for example have turned locals against any form of tourism.

Locals are being priced out of the cities and the noise level is insane, not to mention the rubbish travellers leave behind. Can you blame the locals for being angry? Please think and respect where you travel. All these bad tourist behaviour serves no good for any of us.

Would you ever bare your butt in public? Do you see any other travel trends that make you furious? Let’s have it.

  1. Again, I learn new things from you. Never knew about the cheeky exploits. That makes absolutely no sense! It’s so strange to see the things travelers come up just to have fun. And when you think that travel should be all about experiences, seeing beautiful things and meeting new people… you can do all these crazy things back at home, you don’t have to travel half the world to do it!

But Federico’s original pose… I am sure that could’ve become a trend today if you would’ve let him do it a while longer :))

    • Haha! That’s what l’m saying. Find some really good guy with Photoshop skills and do crap in your own backyard. No need to waste money and time traveling. The Spanish people are always shocked as to the British people who come to Spain on holiday and do nothing but get drunk and act foolish. Not all of them mind you, just enough to give everybody else a bad reputation. You know what is even more repugnant and something l found out recently as it is getting completely out of hand? They do an all-inclusive and then claim that they got food poisoning like on the last day (fake symptoms) and then of course get all the money back. There are now so many slimy lawyers who set up this camp close to the resorts to help the tourists and get a cut. Now the hotels are fighting back with video surveillance etc and they are making it super difficult for the rest of the British vacationers and the ones that are legitimately sick or hurt are treated like criminals :-(. It’s insane, just stay home! As far as Federico’s pose, while it was amusing and l would be in fits of laughter when he did it, I had no choice..haha! You’re right though, it might have caught on. I didn’t want travel photos of junk grabbing 🙂 :-).

  2. Not surprisingly the new generation as always pushing the boundaries, no regard for consequences or who they are upsetting. I have not seen many of this “cheeky” poses, but possibly because I don’t have an Instagram account…in fact I only have Facebook and I use it very sparingly. If we are not careful social media can take over our lives 🙁 The third offender in this rant I am guilty as charged…I actually quite like this type of photo :(…but perhaps you are right, time to move on? 🙂

    Reply
    • It’s just sad that this is the type of behaviour that comes back to haunt you. Of course they would argue that it actually worked for celebrities who gained fame from sex tapes etc. It’s hard to argue with that and such a shame that those are the type of people kids look up to. Nobody wants to work for success. I am kind of surprised that quite the majority doing it being young women. It just says a lot, none of it good. We have Instagram but only show scenery, no people. You’re right, Social media can take over. I remember one picture l took on a train in Tokyo..a row of about 20 people and every single one on the phone texting and l’m sure on FB or Snapchat or IG or Tumblr..etc..etc..Federico always says “Terminator” proved to be wrong. The machines are not taking over, we are turning into the robots :-). Yeah..time to move on and be a trendsetter..I promise to copy you :-). Someone of FB said we should add the yoga poses in front of monuments and selfies with famous paintings too :-).

  3. OMG!!! Butts out is a trend in travel, how very inappropriate and so sad. I travel to learn about new cultures and experience a different life to my own.

    Reply
    • Did you ever think a day would come when that is a thing? It is very sad. What happened to enriching your life experience through travel? We are all doomed!!! :-).

      Reply
    • I’m glad a lot of us didn’t know about it to be honest :-). I am also pretty happy not to have run into a flasher, might have left a shoe imprint 🙂 :-).

      Reply
    • It’s kind of amazing that they even let them have accounts like that. It’s even more shocking that people actually send the pics in voluntarily. What is wrong with these people. I hope it goes away soon too :-). Maybe we’re just getting old! :-).

      Reply
    • Haha! Better your toes than the butt. Can you imagine what they do when they don’t have enough likes. I see people whining on FB about how little likes they got for a picture and the woe is me cry. Sad commentary!

  4. OMG I Had no idea people were baring their bottoms for travel pics! I’m just thankful we’ve never come across that during our travels. I personally get sick of the same super staged pics over and over. We love traveling and we love seeing other travelers’ pics, but we definitely prefer the more organic and unique shots 😉

    Reply
    • You’re not the only one who’s thankful Doria :-). I like my holidays butt free ;-). Haha! I hear you about the staged images over and over, and over! I want to see where you are. I definitely prefer the organic ones. Sigh..what havoc Instagram has wreaked.

      Reply
    • Haha! Lisa, your comment made me laugh so hard. No, thank you is right. I don’t want to see it. The sad part is that they probably think they are being rebellious. Mmmmm.. Nope, just pathetic :-(.

  5. What the heck over the butt one? I am CONFUSED. That is just weird.

I probably HAVE done the arms outstretched one. My daughter has for sure. But I never pick a place based on how well it’ll look on Instagram. I pick whatever is cheapest 🙂

    Reply
    • I’m with you! I would definitely pick a place because of price. Nothing wrong with frugality, and of course, you can always find nice things in any place so it’s a win-win. Yeah..the bare butt thing is very confusing. It doesn’t even sound in any way classy, just disrespectful. It really thrills me that younger people than me, like yourself, also find it idiotic. Gives me hope :-).

      Reply
    • The fact that people happily send in their pictures of them basically uglifying beautiful landscapes makes it even weirder, like they are proud. What is happening to society???

      Reply
    • Makes you feel old doesn’t it? I tend to find out in newspaper articles and then l have to investigate and look on FB groups. It’s insane.. Thank goodness l don’t see this much on my feeds save for the posing thing. Just as well :-).

      Reply
  6. That’s seriously just insane…the butts! Who would they even be appealing to?? Like if you’re trying to get sponsors and followers, I don’t think showing your butt is a good idea lol.

    Reply
    • I didn’t even think of that! How it could affect your future sponsorship. You’re right too..who would it be appealing to but 14 year old boys with raging hormones? Stupid indeed.

  7. I think people spend too much time finding the “right” pose and place to take pictures so they can upload them to social media. Why not take in all the sights and enjoy it with the people you are with? (Old school, LOL :))

    Reply
    • Haha! I’m right there with you with the old school! I want to see places l might never get to and your pose just distracts :-). I am guilty of taking photos of food at 1 to 3 places we eat at when we travel, but then…it’s all good. I gotta enjoy the place :-).

      Reply
  8. Ha ha. Well you know most of those things don’t bother me. I’d never heard of the bare butt trend, but I will say people need to use common sense and not be disrespectful when visiting some countries and their monuments. Discretion people. If you’re going to pose nude, or partially, in a well recognized place, don’t be dumb enough to post those photos online!

    Reply
    • I remember reading a Jennifer Lawrence interview where she said she had to use some sacred rocks to scratch herself in Hawaii, and l think if these are the sort of people the younger generation looks up to, then what hope do we have? Seems like common sense has taken a permanent vacation with a lot of these people! Then being dumb enough to post it for the world to see? Haha!! Takes the cake in stupidity.

      Reply
    • Yeah! Daring isn’t it? More like stupid. They will be the same ones that cry about their phones being hacked..and oh dear..my life is ruined :-). Who thought of this and determined it was a good idea!

      Reply
  9. Oh my goodness. I am not even comfortable having my picture taken solo, and these people are courageous enough to bare their behinds? What’s wrong with these people? However, I am guiity of taking photos of my feet, my shoes actually, because they were pretty and new. 🙂

    Reply
    • Haha! You and me both. I’m hard pressed to find photos of me. I don’t know about courageous..haha! :-). They must make their parents proud because l assume if they can do such nonsense in public places, they do much worse closer to home. I don’t blame you one bit for taking pictures of your shoes. I would have done the same :-).

      Reply
  10. Don’t get me started on all the low life travellers out there. Yes Butt shots are stupid, but only the tip of the iceberg as far as crass behaviour. Why, why why? Because it’s all about THEM and not the destination. Here are things that get us upset:
    – the smart phone shuffle. If you’re going to be looking at your cell phone, move over and let people pass.
    – the tour group stampede. Argg, we get these in Split, especially Koreans. Just seems that people lose all their manners when in greater numbers and won’t even move over for anyone else.
    – people who see you take a photo and come right up to you to take the same photo. Yesterday in Prague some Asian guy did just that, bumping into Lissette to take the same photo
    – I’ve had people ask me to move so that they can take a photo. Fuck off. The gall – can you imagine asking people to get out of the way of your shot?
We get so much bad behaviour in Croatia from classless tourists that I often feel embarassed to be a foreigner…

Instagrammability? I don’t use Instagram but you can say the same for Pinterest or Facebook. People don’t have much imagination. When I post something on Pinterest I can usually guess what will do well – it’s always the same old places…

You mention most culprits being young women. Totally. When did they all become so self absorbed? The other new thing is taking a photo of your bff looking out in the distance as she’s contemplating life…they take 10 photos then they switch.

Anyway, could add a lot more things to this rant but Spanky wants me to cook breakfast now…

Oh, Kemkem. When I go to your site and click on “blog” I don’t see any of your posts. Just the ads on the side. The only way the get to your posts seems to be through the emails you send to subscribers…

    Frank (bbqboy)

    Reply
    • Haha!! Frank, I knew you still had a few pet peeves in you :-). It really does suck to spend money going to a place only to disrespect it or not even bother trying to enjoy it and have it be just about the pictures…sad! I mentioned how Federico always says Terminator got it wrong and humans are actually turning into the machines. I always think of that when l see everyone on their phones. We get like 1000 minutes or something like that with our plan. I use like 2 minutes a month because l really hate the phone. My oldest sister gets pissed because she loves the phone and can never get in touch with me. I usually have it uncharged, in my bag, volume off etc. I prefer email :-). The phone is good for scrabble and words.
I must admit l have been guilty of asking people to move so we can take a picture at least 3-4 times! This usually happens when we wait, and wait..and not someone taking a picture but someone just staring at the statue etc.. like in a museum. Federico always waits for people to move and would even wait 20-30 minutes for a clear shot (muttering loudly) which infuriates me, I’m like forget it. Sometimes though, people just stand there, looking at maps etc..for minutes on end. In that case, I go up and say would you mind moving so we can take a picture? I don’t want my picture ruined with a backside and a map.. :-).
Hahah!! You should be flattered when they take the same picture. I think people don’t have vision and if they see someone with a nice camera taking a shot, I think they would assume it (often correctly) that it will be a good shot. You’re right though, a lot of people don’t realize how pushy they become when they are on a quest.
I wish l had your ability to predict Pinterest success. Such a crap shoot for me. We do have Instagram and only of landscapes or monuments, sometimes food, but no people, including us. Definitely no backside 🙂
Why do you think young women do this? Is it the Kardashian effect? Like a desire to out-trash each other in a quest for dubious fame? I have been noticing the “contemplating life” pics… It must be tough..bare butt or not?? 🙂
Thanks for letting me know about the blog. I thought it was just me as it happened a couple of times. I will look into it. I am starting to be displeased with this paid theme. I never had so many updates and problems with free ones :-(. I just did the last update after l got your comment. Would you mind checking now, hopefully that was what the update was about. I will email support.. Thanks.

  11. Oh I love a good rant! So cathartic! So, I’ve totally missed the whole “baring your butt” trend this summer (thankfully) but OMG, I’ve seen enough butt cheeks sagging down from ultra short-shorts to last me a lifetime. And I can’t even imagine picking a place because of how it looks (a been there, done that moment?) versus what I’d see, the history or cultural aspects and YES, the food. Thanks for suggesting new poses for Federico. 🙂 I myself like the pics of both of you having a good time in some new place. Hey, and I recognize your first photo of our lovely Lagos marina. Looking forward to seeing you in October. Anita

I don’t think the world needs to see that particular pose from him :-). Don’t you think that picture of Lagos was missing you mooning? 🙂 :-). People just don’t realize what they are missing by not putting down the phone or pulling down their pants for that matter! :-). We are definitely looking forward to seeing you guys soon! We’ve held off on sightseeing so we can all see it together :-).

  12. I cannot agree more with you on this bare butt thing. It’s not cute, it’s not a statement of confidence. To me , it’s simply a lame anti-social behavior, sometimes at the expense of the culture of the host country. It’s disrespectful

    Reply
    • You know these would be the same idiots who, if caught and punished according to the laws of the country where it happens, would cry and cry for help from the embassy. People need to face the consequences of their action if they are going to be so selfish and disrespectful. I agree it is not a statement of confidence, just a pathetic grab for attention. Thanks for the comment.

  13. As far as trashy girls, I think just media and the MTV generation. We joined a gym for our month in Prague and they have a big TV constantly on MTV. And every music video is basically the same. I know older women (like my mom) who get upset with the “new feminism” (baring at all, because it’s your right). That’s not feminism, it’s demeaning yourself and these girls don’t know the difference.

As far as the phone – I always respect other people’s space. I always look around to see that I’m not blocking or holding up anyone when taking a pic. But if I’m walking around and someone says “can you move, youre getting in my shot” I’ll tell them to fuck off. We’re in a public space. Maybe if you’re a National Geographic photographer with a press badge I’ll move, but if you’re a duffus taking phos on your cell phone then I’m sorry…

    Reply
    • Isn’t it insane that l totally forgot about MTV. I have not heard that name for over 10 years l think :-). It is rude for someone to say get out of their shot if you’re just walking around. I mean what are you supposed to do? :-). I was only referring to the ones in front of the object that are totally oblivious…and for a long, long time :-). Federico having no patience for most things save for photography will wait angrily till they move, sometimes waiting 1/2 hr while l get upset and usually go and tell them to move. Really! I think some just do it out of spite, especially when solo..like some sort of interaction thing, no matter how bad :-).

    • Thank you :-). It is definitely following the crowd. Enough already .. haha! Or maybe we just read too many blogs :-). The first one is definitely stupid. I can’t even begin to understand what goes through their minds!!!! I’m glad younger people like you agree as well. Thee is hope for the world! :-).

    • Haha!!! I checked out that IG page this morning and they are still going strong so apparently butt baring is still a thing. I am however glad that are a lot of cities have begun cracking down on these asshats and fining them heavily (I would also suggest a lashing 🙂 ). Haha! Those selfie people really take the cake. Imagine not even taking time to enjoy the place :-(.

      Reply
  15. Oh dear. I’ve never stumbled across the butt cheek baring Instagram photos. I guess Instagram doesn’t consider me “cool” enough to show me those accounts. The behavior that makes me crazy is the defying safety instructions to get a photo. There was a sign next to a geothermal geyser in Iceland that warned that the water was boiling and the nearest hospital was an hour away. The “Attention Dumbasses” wasn’t stated, but understood. On a trip to the Isle of Skye in Scotland, our tour guide was apoplectic when a cadre of young Asians in our group ignored his pleas to stay back from the sea cliff edge as they took photos trying to catch each others’ jumps in mid-air. Sigh.

    Reply
    • It’s weird how they decide what to show to people. It’s like getting some weird hits on the blog with google searches that have absolutely nothing to do with the post! :-). You are so right about the safety point. I just might edit the post to include that because it really burns my hide when these idiots risk their lives as well as rescuers lives doing something silly for a selfie. How many times do we have to read about people dying while trying, enough to get the selficide label? What is wrong with people nowadays and it crosses all age barriers too. I freely admit that sometimes l think bad thoughts when l see people doing this :-). Wicked l know!!!

      Reply
  16. I loathe the trend to take lots of selfies. Some “travel themed” Instagram feeds are just full of pictures of people rather than places, so that you learn absolutely nothing about the destinations.

    Reply
    • Yeah! That is one of the worst ones for sure. They hog the place and the end result is a view of their heads that obliterates the scenery so they might as well have been in their living room posing as opposed to traveling and enjoying new things and places. It’s a sad commentary on life that we have become so shallow as human beings and we feed off these stuff. Where does it end? Just yesterday l was reading about the girl that broke 110 bones and 11 hours of surgery because she was doing an extreme yoga pose off a frigging balcony and now will be recouping for years to come. What a shame!

      Reply
  17. Your last one gets me the most — disrespect which could be lumped into the cheeky poses. We are guests in other cities and countries. No one would act that way in someone else’s home, so why out in public, at an attraction or in a restaurant!

    Reply
    • I keep wondering why they feel it’s okay to behave like that when in foreign places? Is it because they feel superior and therefore entitled to act like rotten idiots? It’s sad that it keeps getting worse. Maybe they should start having people take classes and pass before being allowed to travel :-). All these countries are getting angry and of course we all have to suffer thanks to the bad behaviour of a few. 🙁

  18. ROFL, sorry but you hit my button. All those irritating things I’ve seen from ‘the masses’ out there that drive me nuts! I think my real ‘oh-so-tired-of-this’ is the blogger who feels the need to be in each photo, either posed and smiling at me or with a back shot, arms outstretched and reaching for the scene to help me know it is spectacular. I read travel blogs to learn about places, not the writer. Now a shot or two is fine every so often (I like to see they are aging like I am or gaining weight from all those wonderful meals they have been smiling at. . .that way I know they ate them). In general though is the rudeness that I have seen from fellow travelers, looking and photographing locals as if they weren’t alive and pushing and shoving. And whoever invented the ‘selfie’ may someday be credited with the start of humanity’s demise. I” get off the soap box now. . .

    Reply
    • Haha! I’m glad you have let it all out! Obviously you haven’t read my pet peeves with travel bloggers..hahah! We don’t escape my wrath either and l touched on that as it is definitely one of my pet peeves.
It drives me nuts too. I also want to see the actual places they’re at and l couldn’t care less what outfit they are wearing etc. Hahah! seeing them grow older and fatter..lol! Not with the photoshop apps out there, no one likes to look real. Yeah..the inventor of the selfie did a bad thing indeed. It’s all going to hell in a hand basket :-(.
