Stirling Castle, Scotland

I realized later on that l had booked this trip to Edinburgh and Glasgow much too soon after our Poland trip. Seemed like there was no time between unpacking and packing again, and off we went. I do believe something was lost in translation as the weather in Scotland was supposed to me “muggy”. Of course we packed tee-shirts and each had just a light jacket. Wrong! It was cold and windy for at least four days after our arrival. I ended up purchasing yet another knitted cap for my head. Our first AirBnB host was such a sweetie. The flat we stayed in had just been purchased by him and wasn’t moving in for a month, but he insisted on bringing us some jackets from his other apartment. Jackets plus umbrellas. Did l mention that it frequently rained? The weather was pretty much like in Krakow and London. Explains why it is so lush and green here. Made for a nice change from Valencia’s heat. First impressions of Scotland? A cheaper, slower paced version of London. In other words, fantastic!

We’ve been having fun sightseeing, mingling with the other tourists and yes….eating. I had been reluctant to try the famous Scottish haggis. What is haggis you ask? It’s a meat dish made from the heart, lungs and livers of sheep. There’s a whole bunch of other stuff in there too. Lard, oatmeal, onions to name a few.  It sounds disgusting and l certainly didn’t think I’d like it, but like it l did. What does haggis taste like? Tastes like pate or crumbled sausage. Haggis is usually served with neeps and tatties, Scottish for turnips and potatoes. Needless to say, we had it several times. Funny enough, I’ve only had Scotch eggs just once :-).

Postcard from the land of haggis. This is it, complete with neeps and tatties.

Our time here is winding down fast. I can’t wait to tell you all about it as soon as l get caught up with crap. First comes our experience in Warsaw though, after which we can then move on to the delights of Glasgow and Edinburgh which was a nice surprise for me. Hope this postcard from the land of haggis finds you in good spirits! I think this will be our last travel for the summer. We are going to stay put in Valencia and do things there so we can avoid the kind of nonsense we encountered last year :-). Make sure to read our awesome Glasgow guide.

How is your summer shaping up? Any plans for travel or are you staying put as well?

  1. Stirling Castle looks like the very definition of Scotland in my imagination and the haggis and tatties sound delish. I’m not sure about the neeps but I’d definitely be up to giving them a try. Funny enough, there’s a restaurant here in Lagos with a Scottish cook so we’ve had haggis accompanied with bagpipe music for Robert Burns Day and the Scottish eggs are great. You’ll have to give them a try! Keep warm and dry, Anita

    • It’s what l pictured as well. What a wonderful place. Federico kept talking about some Sean Connery movie 🙂 that we saw a long time ago. I would love to try the Scottish eggs at the Lagos restaurant. I’ve loved those eggs since l was a kid :-). The needs tasted like carrots. We actually thought it was. We’re back to the intense heat of Valencia now. Not quite like Seville, but pretty hot.

  2. If good weather came with the beautiful green Scotland (or other countries that are generally wetter) offer, that would be a perfect place on earth indeed!

I can understand your reluctance to trying the haggis… I would have doubts as well, but we have something similar in Romania (made of lamb organs – it’s called Drob – which I like, so it can’t be that different or taste bad). Can’t wait to catch up on your adventures abroad!

    • You’re right. It would be the perfect place indeed if good weather came with it. As you know, London would be the ultimate place for us to live, this comes pretty damn close with the same shops, food etc but much lower prices, even housing. The weather however, cancels it out for us, but it’s fun to dream of what could be. I was surprised how tasty the haggis turned out to be. I don’t love it by itself just like l don’t like sausage as a meal (not enough 😉 ) , but piled on chicken, beef etc…and l love it. I look forward to trying Drob.

  3. Hi, Kemkem! (Should that be Kem Kem or Kemkem or KemKem? Or another variation?) How are you? I’ll be back more consistently one day, but for now, this Scotland postcard was a fantastic bit! I look forward to trying haggis and neeps and the castle looked cool. I don’t know when I’ll be able to get my husband to go to Scotland as the weather in June looked kind of glum! Probably when we retire and live somewhere warm constantly! But hearing it was so green helps recompense.——-Terri

    • Haha! Call me whatever you want..the way my mom and family say it is KemKem :-). I hope all is well with you. I know you’ve been wicked busy..life doesn’t wait for anyone or anything does it? Spanish lessons and all. I think you would like the haggis, very tasty. The castle was really cool, we visited the Edinburgh castle as well but hands down Stirling was my favorite. Yeah..the weather sucked the whole time but our last 3 days, go figure. It is incredibly green, the views from the trains are just absolutely insane :-). I bet it would be a wonderful time once retirement kicks in :-).

        • Exactly. Sounds like a gggrreeaatt plan to me. Right now at this second, I would take 65. We just had a heatwave where the temperature crept up to 91. It’s subsided, but l understand another is on its way :-(.

    • Yeah..that would stop me from living there, but l really, really liked both places, especially Edinburgh :-). It tastes like pate to me. We had it on chicken breast and l felt like l had died and gone to heaven :-).

  4. Looks like you’ve got a bit of dog poop on your plate 🙂
I’d like to go to Scotland one day, see the castles and do some hiking!

  5. We loved Stirling and could have stayed much longer than the two days we were there on our trip through Scotland. The castle was one of our favorites of the many we saw and the views from the nearby Wallace Monument are spectacular. The weather though is another thing. We were there for two weeks in August and it rained for at least part of every day. Like you we wouldn’t want to live there, but will definitely return for another visit. And yes we tried the haggis and I (Tim) liked it but Anne not so much.

    • I agree with you. Stirling for me was so much better than Edinburgh. We only did 2 along with the Hollyrood palace. The views are definitely awesome. Yeah..the weather was bad for 80% of the time. The last 3 days were wonderful though..like it was telling us to go home :-). Yep..would definitely like to go back again and hope for better weather even though l know it’s just wishful thinking. How could she not like haggis? It’s delicious 🙂 :-).

  6. Hi Guys, I just found your blog and noticed that you are visiting Scotland.I am looking forward to reading more about your trip, as we have just returned from a cruise of the British Isles. We were in Glasgow and Edinburgh for one day each – not nearly enough time to do all we wanted, but enough to make sure we will return. Enjoy your time there.

    • Hi Suzanne. Thanks for reading :-). We are now back in the heat of Valencia after 10 days in Scotland. They flew by so fast. You’re right, one day is not enough to get the full feel. Haha..nice to know the taste left you wanting more. We would love to return as well. We had a great time :-). Hope you enjoyed your cruise.

  7. Scotland, such a great country..I am biased since I have married a Scottish:) If the weather was a bit better I would move there myself. We will be visiting Edinburgh in early July, to spend sometime with Brian’s family. I am glad to hear you have enjoyed haggis…it is an acquired taste, I love it. Beautiful picture of Stirling Castle, there are some great castle’s in Scotland, my favourite is Eilean Donan Castle 🙂 Enjoy having a rest from travelling Kemkem

    • Oh..you married a Scotsman!!! Good for you :-). I’m glad to hear you say you would live there too if it wasn’t for the weather. Makes me feel as if my assessment was right. I wonder if the weather would be better in July? It sort of reminds me of San Francisco is a way weather wise. Haggis is tasty :-). I wish we’d had time for more castles, only saw Stirling and Edinburgh but hopefully at another time, we’ll get to explore more. I keep checking out flight deals but l’m determined we will stay still, or maybe go nearby in Spain only :-). Hope you guys are hanging tight, l know it must be a bit stressful with the house sale and wanting to get started on new adventures ;-).

  8. We are planning a trip to Scotland for next year: Castles and sheep and YES, they also do a vegetarian haggis version! Glasgow and Edinburgh are both great cities to come back and explore again and again I think…

    • Oh..great. We definitely also feel Scotland is a place to visit again. There are still so many castles to be explored, not to mention food to eat :-). Nice that there is a vegetarian haggis for you to enjoy. I bet it’s tasty too :-). Thanks for the comment.

  9. A tad late commenting, lol! So glad you enjoyed Scotland, I too fell in love. I was there for two weeks traveling around the country and fell in love with the culture, people and the food. I was extremely lucky because we only had like three days of rain, the rest was pure sunshine. I’m actually thinking of taking a year to move to Glasgow to complete a program…can’t help but love how quick and inexpensive it is to visit Malaga from there as well. BONUS!

    • Haaha! Better late than never. I was just looking at some images in preparation for the post and was blown away again by the lushness. We so enjoyed it and l can understand why you would want to do a program there. At some point, l would enjoy staying there longer because it suits me well (except for the weather 🙂 ). It totally reminds me of London so it should be no big adjustment..plus..yeah..Malaga, your beloved would be so close so to speak :-). Do it!!!! We had 6 days or rain/cold and 3 days of sun
