Malaga Fashion Museum: (Things to do in Malaga)
A while back, Federico and l had visited the Auto museum here in the city of Malaga, which l wrote about here. It is actually a car and fashion museum. The owner, that very wealthy man from Portugal, Joao Magalhaes, has a passion for both cars and haute couture.
This is a very smart move in my opinion. You gotta love one or the other. I happen to like both. While he drooled over the cars that l was not interested in, l spent a fair amount of time imagining myself in all these beautiful designer clothes, in a bigger size of course. :-). It is so cool for the auto museum to include fashion since they go hand in hand.

Some of the clothes are paired with cars belonging to the owners or the owner’s girlfriends etc. and they have little placards attached to them with a bit of history. They were written in both English and Spanish, which helped a lot as we did not spring for the cost of headphones.
A lot of the dresses and hats belonged to both socialites like Wallis Simpson and Peggy Guggenheim, and celebrities like Eva Peron, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Madonna, and Ava Gardner.
I spotted a black dress that looked familiar, and upon reading the plaque, confirmed that it was a lovely black gown that l had seen on Naomi Campbell on the internet. There was also a variation of Madonna’s famous cone bra outfit that was also designed by Jean Paul Gauthier. It was right next to the car that she had used on one of her concert tours.
Here’s a video to show you the interior of the fantastic auto and fashion museum:

Designers at Malaga Auto Museum:
The designers include Balmain, Ungaro, Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin and Channel, and that perennial favorite, Louis Vuitton. This fashion museum is a place one could easily spend a few hours as we did. The place is available, as are the cars for functions such as weddings. There is actually a chapel inspired by the Moulin Rouge. I think l could totally get into that, a 20’s flapper-styled wedding.

The car collection is over 25 million Euros. I think it is a safe bet that the collection of fashion dresses, hats, and vintage luggage here, also runs into the millions. The crazy thing is, l don’t think this guy even lives in Spain! If this was my collection, you can bet l would have a penthouse view of it :-), and spend all day saying “my precious” 🙂 🙂 :-). Plan on spending at least three hours to see a pretty good chunk of it.
This fashion museum to me is a must-see if you find yourself in Malaga.

I’m not even that into fashion but that looks like a fun, colorful place! I love the old cars!
I definitely had a blast. There was a vintage Louis Vuitton box luggage that was so cool, l wanted to steal it..lol! If it could talk, l am sure the stories would have been awesome. It was so, so worn..
Hell, I would wear a few of those outfits. Not the Campbell’s soup one, obviously.
I could totally see you in one of those flapper dresses along with the long beads doing the cha-cha! :-). Welcome back from your trip.
I would totally be into the fashion museum. Some of these dresses remind me of the Downton Abbey wardrobes.
I’ve never watched that show, but l know it’s set in the past so these would be appropriate. We are them loading cars onto trucks often. I think they rent out a lot, so l wouldn’t be surprised to see my fave Dame Maggie Smith in these.. :-). I know she was/is on it.
I know nothing about fashion, but I’d sure like to see my wife wear these dresses. And I believe that it’s an amazing idea to mix cars with fashion: this way, nobody gets bored 🙂 I would focus on the cars more, though…
Yep..a very good idea to combine both. I loved seeing the cars, but l also enjoyed the clothes and hats, so while he went off looking at his favorite cars and all, l enjoyed the fashion. I noticed the other couples were doing the same thing..lol! It was not boring for either one of us..
I love how the fashions are paired with cars – I like both although I like fashion a bit more. You’ve inspired me to make a visit to FIDM’s fashion museum here in L.A.!
It’s really cool, the pairing..like a Gaultier cone outfit with the car that Madonna used etc.. I never went to the museum in L.A, but would love to see your review of it. 🙂
I would totally go for the clothes, but my hubs would enjoy the cars…so you’re right, a completely brilliant move! Loving those vintage gowns! The 20’s was my favorite decade for style;-)
Mine too! The women looked so chic in those outfits. The best part was there was a Photoshoot going on that day for the first hour we were there. I got a kick out if watching the couple in the getup in front of various cars. 🙂
A fashion museum is my dream come true. I’d have spent hours upon hours admiring all the pretty clothes. Also, a car and fashion museum…it is perfect for couples.
Ha! Ha! Ummm fashion please especially that huge, gorgeous, golden hat! I like looking at pretty cars. I even like reading about them in mags like GQ (I have 3 brothers…), but I couldn’t tell you what’s what.
I bought a car once. It was red!
I could totally see you in that hat! In fact, l thought of you when l was editing it :-). I love cars too, and they were all gorgeous. It was red..lol! I like the expensive ones l can’t afford, the Maclaren, Aston Martin, Labo etc..sigh 🙁
Me too! My wish: a “Silver Shadow” or just some fast convertible with me looking cute and my hair flying all over the place. Perhaps not with my hair flying LOL!
P.S. If you like grand British historical eras, you’ll like Downton Abbey. Go get the DVD, you’ll like it!
You’ve been watching too many Grace Kelly movies.:-). That would be fun though. I saw snippets of the old Downtown Abbey, never got into it. I have never given this new version a go though. I might, and this museum rents out the clothes and the cars, so l would not be shocked if some of these were used on the series.
Bill and I were in Malaga with my two teenage granddaughters in 2015. We would have had a blast here: Bill with the cars and the two girls and I with those colorful fashionable stuff! Regrets.
Aahh.. what a pity. I thought l wouldn’t enjoy it either, but we both loved it. Some of the cars are just amazing, I think you all would have been geeking out over the cars as well, especially the ones used in the movies or the Elvis one, or the one that looked like it was the Batmobile :-).
That museum looks fascinating. Gorgeous dresses, but they all look so tiny. The Campbell’s soup dress is priceless.
Haaahhha! I said the same thing. They are pretty, but pretty tiny too. I’m always amazed at how dresses that use such little material can cost so much.. :-).
I’m not really interested in cars, or fashion, but the Fashion Museum does look like a fascinating slice of history. It seems to conjure up an era…
I get you. I wasn’t very thrilled to visit the auto museum but l was blown away with the sheer number of automobiles and the history..especially like the old Elvis Cadillac and Arnold’s car and then l saw some of the costumes and l was enchanted.
I love Spain, but have not yet been to Malaga. thx for this great post about the Fashion Museum. I’m sure I would enjoy a visit there.
It was pretty cool and a fun way to spend an afternoon. The James Bond car was so freaking beautiful as was the one that belonged to Princess Grace. I think you would enjoy it.
The Fashion Museum in Malaga, Spain did an excellent job of showcasing fashion throughout the years! Your photos are excellent; like I am actually there!! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for reading. It is really a cool experience, one l liked much better than l thought it would.
