Hilarious!

This is an oldie but a goodie! As you may or may not know, since living in Seville, l have been trying to learn some Spanish :-) . I certainly don’t expect people to speak English since l am a guest in their country. Part of the learning has involved language exchange with some neighbors as well as new friends we met online through a language exchange program.

It is going very slowly indeed for me :-( . But my motto is “never give up, never surrender”. Bonus points if you know what movie that is from. This movie rocks! I first watched it seven years ago, then l loaned my copy to a friend, who loaned it to a friend. Needless to say, l never got it back.

El Crimen Ferpecto is a dark comedy from the mind of Alex de la Iglesia. It centers around Rafael, a clerk at a big department store. Rafael is the ultimate egoist. His mother gave birth to him while shopping in the store, and he considers it his home. His life revolves around the store and women.

He does his best to sleep with all the attractive women in his department and has no problems stalking the clients. One day, Rafael mistakenly kills his rival who has just gotten the managerial  promotion that he had also been up for. Unfortunately for him, the crime is witnessed by Lourdes, an “ugly” (by his standards) staff member. She helps him cover up the crime.

English subtitle trailer can be found here.

Lourdes motive is not one of kindness. She has long loved Rafael and sets about taking over his life completely. He lives in constant fear of her because she makes it clear she is willing to go to jail for her part in the crime rather than give him up.

She forces him to fire all the blonde bimbos! no more sex after hours in the home interior department and proposes to him on live television. Rafael becomes so depressed, he starts hallucinating and communicating with the ghost of his victim who suggests killing Lourdes. Rafael starts to plan the “perfect crime”.

If you like dark humor, you will love this movie. It has English as well as many other languages for subtitles. It scores 85% on Rotten tomatoes, and it’s well deserved. I have seen it a few times and have found it funny each time. Monica Cervera who plays Lourdes is an absolutely wonderful actress. You can’t help but love her. She was actually born and bred in Malaga, just like Antonio Banderas.

You should check out this movie. I guarantee you a wicked good time. This time, l watched it in Spanish without subtitles, and l was able to understand it some. I know youtube has the complete movie in Spanish, French and Italian. You can find Croatian, Hungarian etc. subtitles here along with English. See how popular it is? :-) . I think it’s on Amazon, but l am not sure if it’s streamed.

Available language subtitles can be found on this link.

How are your language skills? Do you speak Spanish? would you watch El Crimen Ferpecto?  Do you think it’s just too mean? or are you just not feeling subtitles?
